Visual Scrap #17
Cat Gatekeeper

⏰ Do you like cats? Do you need to be forced into taking a break? The answer is the Chrome extension Cat Gatekeeper. I love that it takes something cats are known for – sitting on your keyboard at inopportune times – but solves for the whole "inopportune" thing.

The color talk is from 3:00 - 7:00 and I think it have it queued up for you.

🟦 Add Color Theories to the list of "maybe I should sign up for [insert streaming service here] for a month or two," because I love Julio Torres' take on colors here. Featuring why Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is orange, and yes, his roasting of navy blue.

Taffin Jewelry

💎 I don't wear that much jewelry, but I love looking at it from a design perspective. Every six months or so I think I might try to design my own line for fun. But rarely do I see anything particularly fresh in fine jewelry until I ran across Taffin. I feel like there are interesting colors, and materials like ceramic, and interesting takes on classic designs you've seen a thousand times. Out of my budget, but come drool with me anyway.

🧚‍♂️ On the one hand, Cyberdecked is a trend, but on the other hand, I think the larger idea is really important.

"One reason is that over the last few decades, our technology has become increasingly opaque. Hardware got glued shut, and the systems deciding what we see, make, and consume everyday, from recommendation algorithms to generative AI, have largely become a company secret. Most people today have never upgraded hardware, fixed a bug, or opened a device they own. We're relying on tech much more than ever before, and in many ways, we're digitally illiterate."

It's both taking back control of the technology in our lives and also allowing the underlying structure to become part of the work. Related, I saw something that said BTS footage is becoming as important as the actual final video or imagery for brands, both as a way to prove it wasn't AI, and to showcase this underlying structure as being an interesting or significant part of the thing.

Nan Parati

🪧 It is Jazz Fest season in this part of the world, and one woman, Nan Parati, has hand drawn over 3,000 signs which have become an iconic signifier for the event. Here is an interview with her discussing how she developed her "Nan-u-script."

Came across this typeface on Bazaar Italia and I LOVE IT. No notes.
