(Not So) Random Projects
Side projects eventually go somewhere or teach you something.
Was tired of thinking about work this week. So, instead of a regular design rant, here's a (Not So) Random Projects update. Because random projects aren't really that random. And they're all good for you in some way. Or, they're just fun, who cares if they're good for you.
🧶 I'm about to start back on my Albers/Stella inspired pet blankets. It's been too hot to think about crocheting with half a blanket on my lap, but now I see it as a hopefulness toward cooler weather in three 🫠 months. Looking toward these color ways for the next batch:

🥒 I also wanted to make a pickle spear purse charm and made a life-sized prototype out of some air clay I had around. Pretty sure it will break any moment. Bought some polymer clay to make a more durable version. Tried Fimo, Sculpey and Cernit. They all seem kinda the same. The Cernit is supposed to be translucent (orange gummi bear). And it is, sorta. I think it's intended to be used thinly. Didn't know how much I needed green foil spray paint. I'm good on pickles now.
👛 Dipping a toe into a flea market booth. I started an IG for it. Was doing really well posting and now I already fell off a cliff this weekend. Social media is work, folks. Yes, also designed the logo. There is also a second logo that we're still on the fence about. But I think this is the winner. I should take my own advice. Maybe a whole other post on that next week.
🖍️ Not a project, but did go to the Lauren Rodgers Museum of Art yesterday. And it was well worth not getting my regular article written. Highlights were this crawfish effigy basket and all the textures in the Sam Gilliam show. Upcoming kimono show looks cool too. Also, this is the place to get donuts on the way to the museum.
✍️ Then there is always THIS writing project. And in the end I wrote a little something anyway. I can't believe it's almost time to get started on the 2027 New Year's card project. 2026. 2025. Hope you have some (not so) random projects yourself!
P.S. Remember when I talked about using the internet less for moodboards and general inspiration? I still think that's a good idea. I carried my camera around every day, and got within one or two frames of finishing the roll and then just...forgot about it. So, don't get the impression I finish everything.
